Project provides support as a Rotary district activity

The Ecuador Eye Care Project for 2001 and 2002 is a cooperative effort between the Corvallis Rotary Club with Coos Bay - North Bend (John Flaxel, M.D.), Gold Beach (John Rush, O.D.) and Myrtle Point (John Reslock, O.D.) Rotary Clubs as co-sponsors. Also acting as a sponsor is the Santa Elena Rotary Club of Ecuador.

Contributing clubs include: Corvallis, $15,000, Myrtle Point, $2,500, Coos Bay - North Bend, $2,000, Greater Corvallis, $1,250, Eugene, $1,000, Coquille, $1,000, Medford Rogue, $750, and Corvallis Morning, $500.

These amounts are part of an anticipated $100,000 budget that includes $25,000 from a District matching grant and $50,000 from a Rotary International matching grant. This project is a follow-on to the eye care project initiated in the 1997-1998 year and since carried on up through the 1999-2000 year under Rotary Humanitarian grants. The next phase will include additional visual screening of patients on the Santa Elena peninsula, refractions, medical eye examinations and the fitting of prescription glasses for an estimated 900 patients; dispensing glaucoma, allergy and conjunctivitis treatments; cataract surgeries and pterygium operations for approximately 40 patients. The project will also provide training of an in-country refractionist to further support the initial establishment of the Rotary Eye Care Clinic at the Virgin of the Swan Clinic in La Libertad.
