Rotarians work for successful Air Show

The 7th Annual Oregon Coast Fair, sponsored by the Coos Bay - North Bend Rotary Club, is due to kick off on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001. There will be something for everybody. Viewers will be treated to spectacular aerobatics by professional performers, skydivers, military flybys and vintage warbirds will be on display. The Oregon Air National Guard will set up a portable tower and coordinate tours along with supplying static displays of tracked combat vehicles. Doug Fletcher, Ron Stillmaker and Gary LeTellier are co-chairmen of the event for the Rotary Club. They are already busy lining up entertainment and displays for the annual event. Their work began the day last year's Oregon Coast Air Fair wrapped up. "We're becoming a credible air show within the circuit of performers and promoters," Fletcher explained. "Attending the International Conference of Air Shows gives us ideas and we're able to meet with the performers and book them on-site." LeTellier, who manages the North Bend Airport where the Air Fair takes place, wears a couple of different hats in his show role. He is responsible for keeping the general aviation airport functioning in the hours before, during and after the Air Fair. That includes the logistics of working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Air National Guard to safely operate the airport for the benefit of spectators, aerialists and the airlines that will continue to board and disembark passengers the day of the show. Hundreds of manhours are put in on the Air Fair by members of the Coos Bay - North Bend Rotary Club. Their work ranges from putting together all elements of the show to selling tickets and directing parking for the thousands of spectators expected for the air show and its accompanying vintage auto show. By keeping expenses to a minimum, Air Fair managers are able to add to their profits. Proceeds from each show are booked right back into next year's operational budget and any surplus will be used for scholarships, according to Fletcher.
